First established in 1970, the original farm was in dairying before converting to what is now the largest producer of Group One winners in New Zealand. Oaks winners, Derby winners and Champion racehorses in all corners fo the globe have been bred and raised at Chequers Stud.

In 2010 brothers Mark Fraser-Campin and Chris Champin ushered in a dynamic new era for Chequers. Taking over the reins from their highly successful father, Jim, they purchased Battle Paint to stand alongside leading stallion Deputy Governor. Not only do Mark and Chris bring their own style of horsemanship to Chequers but generations of experience and success in an increasingly tough industry.

Chequers Stud, the home base, runs in combination with Domino Park (NZ) its agistment farm of an additional 360 acres of rolling pasture. This leaves the main farm free over the winter period to enable the pastures to recover and with meticulous pasture management in progress, the famous 'clean green' is a reality when mares and foals start arriving in August for the coming breeding season. As the seasons change and foals need to be weaned, the yearling sale preparations commence and the rotation of stock begins another phase of the season. During the year, a combination of properties, approximating 600 acres are utilised.

When you visit Chequers Stud, the first thing you notice apart from the beautiful grounds and the famous life size bronze statue of 'mare and foal' that adorns the front parade area, is how relaxed the horses are. The peaceful atmosphere is something the horses thrive in and the Campins emphasize the importance of a relaxed. low stress environment.

Chequers is proud of its history and more importantly the protection of their industry against outside diseases. The importation of any negative influence that will affect not only the thoroughbred industry but also the whole country is something that lies close the heart. Foot and Mouth has crippled England and parts of Europe. Even the slightest possibility of this disaster ever reaching Australia or New Zealand would certainly destroy the livelihood of millions of people. To put this all at risk is not a chance that Chequers is willing to partake in.

Chequers Stud provides clients with the perfect conbination of horsemanship, global experience, and forward thinking that is required for the 21st Century and beyond. Chris and Mark welcome your enquiries and trust that they can make your venture into Thoroughbred breeding a pleasureable one.
